Be ready to ask

Make the most of your consultation

Write down a few questions before you go. These cover training, licensing, aftercare and how cost is set.

Ask these before you book

Clear answers to these make a decision much easier.

  • Will a licensed provider see me before any treatment?
  • Who gives the treatment, and what is their license?
  • What specific training do they have for it?
  • What is the device or product, and why do you use it?
  • What does a series involve, and how many visits is typical?
  • What should aftercare look like?
  • If something goes wrong, what happens next?
  • Can I have the full cost in writing first?

Before you go

Take ten minutes to jot down a few things. It saves time and helps you get clear answers.

  • What you would like to change or ask about.
  • Your medical history and current medications.
  • Any reactions you have had to skin products or treatments.
  • The questions you want answered.

At the end of the consultation, write down what was recommended, the number of sessions and the total cost.

Take your time

There is rarely a good reason to decide about a cosmetic treatment in a single visit. If a provider pushes you to book that day, that tells you something.

Other signs to slow down: no consultation, vague answers about who performs the treatment, or no written cost. You can look up most health licenses on the Virginia state board website. A provider who is properly licensed will usually tell you their license type and number if you ask.
